BIOGRAPHY:
In his music, Daniel Townsend explores the dynamic between improvisation and composition, allowing performers to make creative decisions as they progress through the piece. While the initial notation is precise, it often transitions into graphic notation, encouraging performers to infuse their own compositional ideas. The essence of his creative process revolves around determining the necessary structure for a successful performance. Dan is deeply passionate about collaborating across different artistic mediums, such as dance and live-painting. His recent projects reflect this enthusiasm. Notably, he collaborated with the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet to debut a pas de deux set to his composition for piano and cello titled "Leaves." Additionally, he successfully commissioned and organized a performance at the Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, FL, where his music intertwined with the exhibit's works, accompanied by improvisational dance. Collaborating with Henry Sussman to compose music for "Soirée at Walter Benjamin's" was an exceptionally fulfilling project, representing an exciting new chapter in his artistic journey.

EDUCATION / TRAINING:
Ph.D., Music, University of Florida (May, 2024 conferral). Master's in Music, University of Delaware, 2019. B.A. in Music, West Chester University, 2011.
